Past
Dagan's father was a great scientist--some would even say one of the best. It was this reputation that brought a man named Heil knocking on his door. Heil wanted his father to come work for him. He believed that locked within the human genetic code was hidden abilities and powers, and he wanted Dagan's father help to unlock them. However, there was a catch. The experiments that Heil wished for his father to perform were not sanctioned by the government, and if they found out that they were doing them they would get into big trouble. Yet, he believed they were necessary. He told his father just to imagine how the world would change if they could unlock these hidden potential. It was enough to convince his father to come work for Heil. He did not care that Heil kidnapped people from the streets or that the experiments caused them immense pain, because he believed that the end justifies the means.
Yet no matter how hard he tried he couldn't figure out how to unlock this hidden potential that Heil told him about. He started to believe that Heil had been mistaken--that mankind had already reached their full potential and that there was no abilities or powers buried within their genetic code. There was a part of him that believed Heil realized this, and that he actually was the experiment. He was about to abandon the project but than his wife gave birth to Dagan. His parents had wanted a child. It had nothing to do with his father's experiments---through Dagan would become a part of them. No, they were simply a happy couple whom thought that a child would make their family complete. It, however, was clear that something was different about Dagan. It didn't take them long to figure it out.
He was proof that Heil had spoken the truth of the hidden potential within human. He had been born with special powers. He had the abilities to control shadows. He could move through them--traveling from one place to another. He can turn shadows into weapons--along with various other things. He, also, gained nourishment from the sun. His mother believed that he was a monster created from her sin. She never told Dagan's father what that sin might have been, but her punishment for her crimes was to give birth to that thing. She wanted nothing to do with Dagan. She demanded for it to be taken out of their house. It was a request that his father was more than happy to grant.
He saw Dagan as the key to unlocking the answers to the question he had been asking over the last few years. He turned Dagan into one of his experiments--forcing him to endure the same immeasurable pain that the other test subjects experienced. He discovered the secret of Dagan's genetic code. Why he had been born with the abilities he had. More than that he learned how to give abilities to other people. He learned which switch to flick to grant them abilities. What type of powers they possessed varied from person to person. However, it appeared that not everyone's switch was meant to be turned on. In fact, one might say that most people's switch was meant to stay off because many of the test subjects died once their switch was turned on.
Dagan wasn't just forced to endure these experiments just to understand the secrets within his genes. He was, also, forced to endure them as a way to increase his own abilities. His father saw Dagan as nothing more than a tool--a weapon that needed to be molded and shaped before it was fit for battle. Dagan endured these experiments for ten years, and than he decided that it was enough. It was a conscious thought. Sure, he wished for the experiments to stop, but he wanted it to be because his father realized the horrors he had committed upon his own flesh and blood. It did not happen that way. Dagan gained his freedom by lashing out with his powers and causing the lab to blow up. He isn't exactly certain how one with his abilities caused such damages, and suspects that he had help. Whatever the case, he fled into the street.
He found that people outside his father's lab viewed him as his parents did--either a monster or an object to be used as they pleased. He live on his own for two years--doing his best to avoid others as much as possible than he met him. He was about twice as old as Dagan, but in spite that they became fast friends. He was the first person not to regard Dagan with open disdain and disgust. It didn't take long for the man to reveal the reason for his kindness. He wished to use Dagan for his pleasure, but the pleasure that he wish to use him for were different than the ones that others used him for. Dagan endured that abuse for four years, and some part of him believed that he would remain this man's pleasure slave until the day he died. His freedom came in the form of a petite girl named Caia. She saved him from the man's gripped, and offered him to come live with her and other children like him. Children had been born with special abilities, and rejected and abused by society because of them. He didn't think twice before agreeing.

Present
It has been two years since Dagan had came to stay with Caia and the others. They became the family that he had always wanted. While he isn't the most social one of the group, they know that he would do anything for them--even give his own life to ensure that they are safe. He is very protective over them, and like many within his family he is extremely mistrusting of outsiders. In fact, like many within the group he will not think twice about killing an outsider if that means keeping his family safe.
However, the one he is closest to is Caia. He regards her as his savior--as the one that rescued him from his nightmare. More than that she is the one that showed him what a family should really be like. He might even be in love with her, but he is hesitate to share those feelings. He is afraid how she would react if she learns the truth. While he doesn't believe that she would hate him for those feelings, he does believe that sharing those feelings could make things awkward between them. Caia's own abilities make it difficult--if not impossible--to have physical connect with someone, and if he shares his feelings with her than Caia's mind might leap to the fact they could never be together physically. Granted, his own abilities make him one of the few people she can touch without killing.
